Second verse, same as the first. Tonight's January NPD numbers aren't terribly surprising; most systems kept their relative positions. The obvious exception is the constant battle between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. The PlayStation 3 squeaked out a 50,000 unit victory in December, and the Xbox 360 turned the tables in January with its own 56,000 unit advantage. While the two may seem the same, the massive sales numbers from December make a 50,000 unit advantage proportionally larger for this month.
The PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2 both suffered fairly steep drops, one barely cracking the 100K mark and the other not even hitting 50K. It looks like the PlayStation 2 is almost ready for that big game store in the sky. Hardware as a whole, unsurprisingly, suffered a year-over-year drop from 2009. It was down 21%, from $447 million to $354 million.
