Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime made a pretty bold prediction (http://www.techtalkboards.com/do/newsStory?cId=3176817) back in November. Prior to their respective releases, he said that New Super Mario Bros Wii (http://www.techtalkboards.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3171254) would outsell the 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (http://www.techtalkboards.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3170250) by the end of holiday season. He proclaimed, "Absolutely. I say that unequivocally," adding, "Let's take it all the way through the January NPD data -- yes. I'll put that stake in the ground." Well, we got the January NPD data (http://www.techtalkboards.com/do/newsStory?cId=3177921) today and, after tallying up the numbers, it looks like Reggie owes somebody a steak dinner.
Since its release, Modern Warfare 2 has amassed a sales total of 6,156,700 in the United States according to the NPD Group. That number skyrockets to 9,405,700 copies sold if you include PS3 sales, but let's stick with the 360-only numbers for the purposes of Reggie's gamble. Mario, in that same time period, has sold 4,866,700 copies -- certainly a terrific figure that most any game company would be proud to claim as their own, but it's not the better-than-MW2 sort of figure that Reggie said we would be seeing today. The astonishing 4.2 million copies of MW2 that were sold back in November were simply too much for Nintendo's mascot to overcome.
As we've noted (http://www.techtalkboards.com/do/newsStory?cId=3177277) previously, it's likely that we'll see Mario outsell Modern Warfare 2 in the long run. But for the time being, it's Infinity Ward's gem that's reigning supreme.
